Grok features explained: chat, Imagine, connectors and more

We checked this guide against xAI's official Grok pages on 31 October 2026. xAI adds and renames Grok features often, and plans and connectors change fastest. Check this article's published date, and contact Softwired if you want training and materials kept up to date.

The short answer

Grok is xAI's AI assistant. You can use it at grok.com and in the iOS and Android apps. Grok is available in Australia, though xAI says free access, plans and some features vary by location. Grok chats with live search across the web and X, which suits questions about what's happening right now. Multi-agent mode splits hard questions between several agents. Imagine creates images and short videos, and Voice handles spoken conversations.

Grok also reads uploaded files, remembers details across chats, follows custom instructions, drafts long documents in Canvas and links to other apps through connectors. Business plans add team workspaces.

Live search

Grok's live search covers the web and posts on X, so it handles recent news, public reactions and fast-moving topics well. Posts on X are opinions and first reports. Check them against an official source before you rely on them.

How you'd actually use it: "What are people saying this week about the Brisbane 2032 venue plans? Separate official announcements from opinions, and include links."

Multi-agent mode

Multi-agent mode splits a harder question between several agents working in parallel, then combines their findings into one answer. It takes longer than standard chat, and it suits questions with several parts to weigh.

How you'd actually use it: "Compare the pros and cons of leasing and buying a work ute for a small Queensland business, covering cash flow, tax treatment and resale value."

Imagine

Imagine creates images and short video clips from a written description.

How you'd actually use it: "Create a simple illustration of a tradie using a tablet on a job site, flat style, for a newsletter header." Check usage rights and your brand rules before you publish an AI-generated image.

Connectors

Connectors let Grok read from and act in other services. Pick from the built-in connectors and the catalogue, or link a custom MCP server. MCP is an open standard that lets AI tools connect to other software, and our guide to connectors, apps and MCP explains it in plain English.

Grok, Grok Bot and Grok Build

xAI sells three separate products with similar names:

  • Grok is the assistant this guide covers.
  • Grok Bot provides AI teammates that work on a persistent cloud computer.
  • Grok Build builds apps. It replaced Grok Studio, which xAI has retired.

Plans in brief

Grok's personal plans are Free, SuperGrok and SuperGrok Heavy, and each draws usage from a weekly allowance. Grok Business gives you personal and team workspaces. Grok Enterprise adds organisation-wide controls, including single sign-on and automatic user account setup. Some X subscriptions also include Grok. We don't list prices, so check xAI's plans page for current costs.

Watch-outs

  • Check anything sourced from X posts before you rely on it.
  • Check your organisation's policy before you put work data into a personal plan.
  • Review what each connector can read and do before you switch it on.
